Brian Richardson

When did you decide to become an artist?

I took up painting in 1975 as a development from a number of years pencil sketching the things that interested me e.g the opera house under construction, industrial buildings etc.

Where did you train?

Initially I was self taught, in 1991 – 1992 I completed a painting/drawing certificate at Meadowbank Art School

How did your training influence you?

The formal training increased my confidence in the technique I had already developed.

Where do you get your ideas?

The world around me. I regard painting a as method of engaging with the physical world. If there is a spiritual element then I guess it is the feeling I get of connection with the subject.

What artist or artists inspire you?

The “Impressionists”. I paint to get the essence of the subject as expressed by its interaction with light, it was the impressionists that led painting in this direction.

What helped to shape you?

(see 4 and 5 above) I had never exhibited my work until joining the Art Society. By exhibiting I am involving other people with my painting and the company has been good.

What is your favourite medium? Why is it your favourite?

Oil Paint applied with a knife. I feel a painting should be made out of paint, and plenty of it. There is a great joy in manipulating the mobility of thickly applied oil paint.

What is or was you favourite piece? And did you keep it?

I don’t have a favorite piece. If I had a favorite it would be the work that I am most pleased with at the time, but because painting is an evolving process…
